So sorry the pod is late, we’ve had an eventful few days!
This week, we have a difference of opinion over episodes 3 & 4 of Lovecraft Country (4:45), Mark’s happy to see the return of Amazon Prime’s The Boys (10:40), and Elaine declares her love for Gregg Wallace’s buttery biscuit base in her review of BBC1’s Eat Well For Less? (16:10).
And Mark’s been back to the cinema to see The New Mutants (23:37). With an infamously troubled production, and rumours of re-shoots, cuts, and major edits, what did Mark think of this latest (and last?) film in The X Men universe?

Cheers!
In this week’s show, Mark teaches Elaine about piracy in our continuing discussions about Mulan on Disney + (2:00), Elaine gets over-excited about The Batman trailer (9:30), Mark is intrigued by The Suicide Squad trailer (20:41), Mark really doesn't want French & Saunders to be in Death on the Nile (20:41), and we are a bit ‘meh’ about No Time To Die (24:44).

“Honey to the Bee”: Lovecraft Country (Ep2), Cobra Kai, I Hate Suzie

Sunday Aug 30, 2020
We’ve been to the pictures for the first time together in 2 years! We chat about our socially-distanced trip to the cinema (if you want to know more – check out our Tenet Spoiler Special, but only if you’ve seen Tenet!!). And we look ahead to some of the new films coming out over the next few months. What will tempt you to head back to the flicks?
We also return to Lovecraft Country (30:34) for a discussion about episode 2. Was it as good as the opener? We watched the first two episodes of Cobra Kai (12:11), now showing on Netflix. Elaine loved this great big dollop of nostalgia, but will Mark agree? And finally we review I Hate Suzie (21:02), Billie Piper’s dark comedy taking a peek behind the curtain at hacking, celebrity, and teenage fame – available now on Sky Atlantic.
It’s the first week of our new podcasting format, so in this episode we’ll just be reviewing what we’ve been watching. But fear not! If you’re a fan of our Date Night feature, we’ll be staying in this Bank Holiday and watching some films so watch out for a random Date Night episode to drop into your podcatchers shortly…

This week, Mark’s feeling the pressure to be funny and informative...
We review the first episode of Lovecraft County (8:02) - the HBO and Sky Atlantic thrill-ride everyone’s talking about. A warning here: we think it’s best to know as little as possible about Lovecraft Country, so if you haven’t seen it skip along to our next review and come back later. We’ve also finished series 2 of Race Across the World (21:27). But how does it compare to the first series we loved? And finally, Mark’s been to the cinema again. Find out what he thought of Seth Rogen’s new comedy An American Pickle (30:34).
Our Date Night film is Disney’s Robin Hood (1973). Oo-De-Lally!

Important news!
We’re making some changes to the podcast. Join us as we launch the inaugural episode of our new show After Work Drinks to find out what we’re up to.
In today's show, we make our announcement and then get down to business discussing the latest TV and film news. We chew over Disney’s decision to put the live-action remake of Mulan on Disney + (for a premium fee!). And we get excited about the casting news for the final two seasons of Netflix’s The Crown.

It’s our wedding anniversary, so naturally we spent our time exploring Mark’s hatred of New Year’s Eve and The Dark Knight Rises.
Mark’s been watching some old shows: Orange Is The New Black (8:08), Penny Dreadful (12:34), and Halt and Catch Fire (16:18). And Elaine’s been catching up with two new crime documentaries: BBC1’s Reported Missing (20:48) and Channel 4’s Crime and Punishment: To Catch A Sex Offender.
And our Date Night film this week is neo-noir crime thriller A Simple Plan (1998). Perfect for a romantic day (!).

We’ve got no intro music. And no family quiz or old school Top of the Pops to talk about. So, how will we open this week’s show? Rod Hull and Emu, that’s how!
Following on from our recent BAFTA special, we’ve caught up with some winning shows we missed first time round. We review the first series of Race Across The World (4:10), Stath Lets Flats (13:14) and The End of the F***ing World (19:13). Plus, Elaine made Mark watch the first episode of new Channel 5 psychological thriller, The Deceived (27:08). Safe to say, Mark had strong views...
Our Date Night film is gothic revenge drama The Crow (1994) (35:17). Which became, quite frankly, an excuse to talk about goth clubs we went to in the 90s.

This week, Elaine’s had what we’re calling a ‘grief week’. So the first part of the pod goes into baby loss and bereavement, and if that’s something you want to avoid – jump ahead to Mark’s rather entertaining rant about The Emmys (8:26).
We’ve been watching US witches fight in alternate-world drama Fort Salem (13:57), French people surf in supernatural series The Last Wave (20:39), and Brits doing questionable accents in coming of age comedy How To Build A Girl (27:47).
Our Date Night movie was First Blood (or, as Elaine likes to call it, Rambo) (37:24). It did not go as Mark anticipated…
