In this episode, we pay homage to the power of television when going through tough times. Plus, in not unrelated news, Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year.
In TV, Elaine’s been on a documentary extravaganza, with Netflix’s Beckham (12:33), Disney+’s Coleen Rooney: The Real Wagatha Story (22:55), and Amazon Prime’s The Greatest Show Never Made (29:34). We also have a brief chat about mind-bending Netflix drama Bodies (36:29), but will be coming back to this when Mark’s had a chance to watch it himself.
In film, biographical drama BlackBerry (40:45) makes Mark reminisce about the time you couldn't send emails on your phone, whilst comedy-horror Totally Killer (48:45) causes controversy with a key plotline. And we finish with our thoughts on Gareth Edwards’ The Creator (54:00).

In telly, Mark’s been checking out psychological thriller Wilderness (9:30), whilst Elaine’s got mixed feelings on the latest Star Wars offering, Ahsoka (14:25).
In film, Mark has an unexpectedly strong reaction to Dumb Money (21:51), and we disagree about Ken Branagh’s new Poirot outing, A Haunting in Venice (34:20).
For those who are interested, the podcast we mention is called Hooked on Freddie and you can find it here: https://wondery.com/shows/hooked-on-freddie/

Mark reports back on his trip to AEW All In - plus a fun afternoon with our podcasting pals Rob D and Rob W from The Movie Robcast. Blame Rob D for Mark’s wrestling round up! Plus a strange tangent into ‘London Pubs We’ve Been To’ and fun facts about Steven Spielberg’s Hook.
You’ll be glad when we get to the TV section. And this week, Mark has been catching up with Season 3 of Starstruck (7:28) whilst Elaine may have finally found a romantic comedy she likes in Sky Atlantic’s The Lovers (11:00).
In film, it’s a Mark-centric segment as he reviews The Blackening (19:47) and - film of the moment - Past Lives (24:23).
Enjoy!

”You have no soul”: The Sixth Commandment, The Afterparty (S2), Oppenheimer, Barbie
Thursday Jul 27, 2023

Elaine has a really bad cold and is losing her voice, so please enjoy her gradual descent into madness throughout this episode.
In TV, Elaine’s been watching BBC true crime drama The Sixth Commandment (3:39) and Mark’s started on Season 2 of The Afterparty (10:52).
In film, Mark reports back on his attempt at a Barbenheimer day out. Then we turn our minds to our review of the two movies themselves, Oppenheimer (14:26) and Barbie (33:30). No spoilers for Oppenheimer, but we do - in a move that tries Elaine’s patience - have a very brief spoiler chat about Barbie at 50:49.

During this week’s pod, Mark tries to explain two thought experiments to Elaine, with varying results. And Mark mentions wrestling, so if you’re playing The Honeymoon Period drinking game get your glasses ready.
In TV, we start with Elaine sighing before Mark can even get going on his Secret Invasion (3:41) review. Then we move on to talk about Apple TV’s mini-series Hijack (11:00).
In film, Mark’s enchanted by Netflix animated drama Nimona (20:15). And we both try not to self-destruct with Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1. Spoiler free thoughts on MI from 25:37 and full spoilers from 42:22. If you listen to the spoiler section, please be warned that Mark decides to go into a really random side-step where he talks about 80s TV show Interceptor. Apologies in advance.
