Surprise Surprise! In this week’s unexpectedly Cilla Black heavy episode, we look at some of the most talked about TV shows and movies out at the moment.
In TV, we chat about Netflix’s biggest ever series, Squid Game (03:57), and Elaine has, obviously, been watching the latest BBC whodunnit, Showtrial (11:39).
In our film section, we’re doing things slightly differently. Join us as we give our spoiler-free reviews of Eternals (19:04) and Last Night in Soho (32:12). But if you want some spoiler-filled action, carry on to the end of the pod where we return to talk twists, plot holes, and jaw-dropping moments.
Spoilers for Eternals: 52:00
Spoilers for Last Night in Soho: 1:02:47
Enjoy!

We’re back! With a *very* varied collection of TV and films reviews. Listen in wonder as we try to manage really rather extreme tonal shifts…
We’re a few weeks into Series 19 (!) of Strictly Come Dancing (01:39). How has it fared this year? And who makes Mark cry when they dance? We celebrate the return of the Roy family (14:56) in our chat about Succession Series 3 (we’ve only seen episode 1 – don’t worry if you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a spoiler-free chat). And sandwiched in the middle of these two mighty televisual giants is…. Escape the Undertaker (11:10). Yep.
In our film section, Mark’s been to see Venom: Let There Be Carnage (26:07), Elaine inexplicably talks about chickens in her review of The Last Duel (32:39), and Mark has plenty to say about Dune (43:57). A bit of a content warning: the central narrative in The Last Duel revolves around sexual violence and we do discuss that in our review. If that’s not something for you, please jump ahead to hear about Mark’s terrible fellow cinema-goers in his review of Dune (time stamp above).
Thanks for listening!

We return with a packed show!
In TV, we review the first two episodes of Apple TV’s sci-fi epic Foundation (4:41), Mark gets emotional about Series 3 of Netflix’s Sex Education (17:39), we revel in the nostalgia of Sky Max’s Never Mind the Buzzcocks (22:35), and Elaine puts in a good word for the Beeb’s period thriller Ridley Road (28:45).
In our film section, Mark really wants you to see Malignant (34:41) but he can’t really talk about it. And Elaine goes on a rant about Arthurian legend in our review of The Green Knight (40:00).
As usual, we manage to squeeze in a references to Willy Fog and Pharoahs Video Cottingham. And we start the pod with a discussion about (wait for it…) football…. hmm... #cans
Enjoy!

We're back! Sorry, illness has spread around the house recently, so we're here to catch up on everything we've not been able to talk about.
For TV we discuss Amazon Prime’s 90s teen drama Cruel Summer (9:30) and the BBC's flagship Sunday night drama Vigil (17:28).
In movies, Mark's been to see Free Guy (24:42), back when it was a new release (like we say, it's been a while...), we've both managed to check out the now non-Premium Access Cruella on Disney + (32:29), and OF COURSE Mark's been to see the latest film in the MCU, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (41:44).
Enjoy!

Candyman (1992) & Candyman (2021)
Friday Sep 03, 2021

BE WARNED: This episode starts with some appalling singing (disclaimer: Elaine has a very heavy cold). But once you get past that, revel in our ‘buzzing’ (sorry, not sorry) analysis of the original 1992 Candyman film and Nia DaCosta’s 2021 sequel.
We watched the original together at home. Then, due to a strange set of circumstances, Elaine popped to our local cinema to watch the latest film whilst Mark ended up viewing it in big ol’ London Town. Enjoy Mark’s “Northerner visits iconic London cinema” commentary half way through the episode.
We start with our review of Candyman (1992). Spoilers from 8:12. We move on to our spoiler free review of Candyman (2021) at 32:08. Spoilers from 40:29. Enjoy!

We start the pod by showing our complete ignorance of the Olympics. Enjoy Mark’s thoughts on the lesser known sports and his inability to rank gymnasts.
In TV, Elaine ruminates on her devotion to Love Island (5:35). The ITV dating show came into our lives 2 years ago when we were in temporary hospital accommodation during our babies’ neonatal care. We were OBSESSED. Mark’s not joined Elaine in watching Love Island this year – so marvel at his attempts to get a word in edgeway as we discuss (for 20 minutes!) the show everyone’s talking about. Elsewhere, Mark’s been loving Netflix comedy sketch show I Think You Should Leave (27:52). Listen to his attempts to explain a sketch involving a hot dog car…
Away from telly, we started watching 2020 British supernatural horror movie Host (33:50) together. But, one of us was so scared they couldn’t continue. Bet you can’t guess who?! Mark also went to see M. Night Shyamalan’s new twisty thriller Old (43:05). He shares his thoughts on the Shyamalan back catalogue and where he thinks the this latest film went wrong. Both reviews are spoiler free, although you might want to avoid if you haven't seen either of these film as it's best not to know anything before you view.

Elaine has been to see Black Widow. Mark saw it 3 weeks ago, so we can FINALLY have a spoiler filled discussion about the latest MCU film. Be warned this episode contains spoilers from the off - and a fairly prolonged section about Elaine’s big crush on David Harbour….
Oh, and at the end we talk about the trailers for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Snake Eyes, and Eternals too.
